Fourth-Quarter Update
Research Recap submits:
Microsoft’s (MSFT) record quarterly revenues led some analysts to upgrade their 12-month target for the software giant. But others are less impressed and have recently lowered their targets, worrying about the potential negative impact of the growth of tablet devices eating away at Windows-based netbooks and notebooks.
Philip Winslow at Credit Suisse maintained his “Outperform” rating with a price target of $40, the highest of analysts tracked by Alacra Pulse. “We believe that Microsoft continues to successfully streamline its cost structure, which will allow the company to show significant operating and EPS leverage as the economy recovers, the enterprise spending environment improves (particularly in terms of corporate PC shipments) during second half of 2010,” he said.
Trefis submits:
VMware (VMW), majority owned by EMC (EMC), sells desktop and server virtualization software and cloud-based software to corporate customers. VMware competes with Microsoft (MSFT) and Citrix (CTXS) in the virtualization market, which it leads with around 46% share globally.
VMware posted strong results for the second quarter of 2010, driven to a great extent by rising maintenance and service revenues. We expect that VMware will continue its strong performance for the remainder of 2010. Accordingly, we have upgraded the Trefis price estimate for VMware’s stock from around $63 to $75. Following are the reasons for our upgrade.
Bret Jensen submits:
Bret Jensen has nearly 20 years of experience in financial services, and is responsible for portfolio management and investment selection as chief investment strategist for Miami-based Simplified Asset Management.

Neil Carvin submits:
Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) earned $0.51 per diluted share in fiscal 2010’s fourth quarter, which ended on 30 June 2010. This EPS amount was 50 percent more than the $0.34 Microsoft made in the same quarter of 2009.
This post examines Microsoft’s Income Statement for the quarter and compares the entries on each line to our "look-ahead" estimates. Reported earnings were $0.04 per share more than the $0.47 we had forecast for the quarter.
Kenneth Hackel submits:
Sometimes it’s better not to hire your friends, admittedly some late advice for former Bear Stearns executives. For Bill Gates, it’s definitely not too late given the superiority in Microsoft’s strength and consistency of its cash flows relative to its competition and firms in general. However, enough time has gone by to render a verdict on the leadership ability of Steve Ballmer. For Microsoft (MSFT), the tables below are telling, as we compare some important metrics to those of Oracle (ORCL), its largest and most important competitor.
Timothy Lutts submits:
I’m optimistic that the bottom of the May-June correction has passed, and that the market is now gathering strength in preparation for a new leg up.
I’m optimistic in part because so many people are pessimistic! I think the unrelenting media focus on the BP (BP) oil leak has really skewed people’s perceptions of reality.
Robert Freedland submits:
With the difficult stock market environment that we have experienced recently, you may have observed that I have written about my move towards value rather than growth investing. I have selected stocks for my own portfolio as well as for this blog to discuss what I would call investment ’stalwarts’ that are reasonably priced, pay good dividends, and can weather the vagaries of the economy. You have seen me discuss stocks such as Coca-Cola (KO), Sysco (SYY) and McDonald’s (MCD). These are certainly terrific companies but I want to try, with this post, to tip-toe back towards the original intent of this blog, to discuss those companies with steady revenue and earnings growth.
Informatica (INFA) closed at $30.43 Friday, up $3.38 or 12.5% on the day, enough to make the list of top % gainers on the NASDAQ. I do not own any shares of this stock.
